Explore the Different Hair Loss Issues of Twins

Researchers, doctors and hair loss specialists have long been interested in learning more about the causes of hair loss. It’s known that genetics plays a significant role in determining the amount of hair loss you’ll experience as you age. But it’s not the only factor. Lifestyle, diet, stress, unhealthy habits and many other factors also play a part. Researchers turned to twins as test subjects to determine the role these different factors play in hair loss.

Why Are Twins Excellent Test Subjects?

Identical twins, also known as monozygotic twins, are the result of a single egg being fertilized by a single sperm and then splitting into two before developing typically. Identical twins are always the same sex, and they share identical genomes. This makes them good test subjects for studies on the effects of lifestyle, diet, and environment, especially when raised in entirely different surroundings.

Researchers can study these twins and draw conclusions about their health and other physical factors based on their surroundings, diets, lifestyles and habits. For example, by comparing the twins’ lifestyles and diets, when one contracts an allergy and the other doesn’t, researchers can eliminate the common factors in both lifestyles and concentrate on the differences as possible causes.

This was the reasoning for a recent study of hair loss in male and female identical twins conducted at Case Western University in the US. The study revealed interesting results on some of the controllable factors affecting hair loss, such as diet and lifestyle, and it also shed some light on the different factors that most affected hair loss in men and women.

Different Hair Loss Factors in Male and Female Twins

Men have different causes of hair loss to women

The different factors that emerged as playing a part in hair loss in men and women were significant, as these factors are commonly seen as “controllable”. For example, it was found that some of the mitigating factors of hair loss in both men and women were wearing hats when out in the sun and elements.

Male Twins Hair Loss Factors

The factors that appeared most often during the study of male twins were:

  • Smoking
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Heavy drinking
  • Sun exposure
  • Lower body mass index (BMI)

The BMI score is significant as it has a correlation with the level of testosterone in the body. The lower the BMI, the more testosterone. Testosterone breaks down into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), contributing to more hair loss. Some of the other factors that researchers noted were:

  • Stress
  • Caffeine consumption
  • History of skin issues
  • Alcohol consumption and abstinence
  • Number of children
  • Use of hair loss products

Female Twins Hair Loss Factors

The factors relating to stress played a much more significant role in the loss of hair in women than in men. The main factors were:

  • The number of children
  • High blood pressure
  • Higher income bracket
  • Smoking
  • Sleeping longer
  • Multiple marriages
  • Cancer
  • History of diabetes
  • Lack of exercise
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome

Stress was a significant cause of hair loss in both men and women. Reducing stress levels can lead to less hair loss as we age.

Consider Hair Loss Treatments at Bangkok Hair Clinic

Bangkok Hair Clinic offers three types of effective, non-surgical hair loss treatments that can be particularly effective in reducing temporary hair loss caused by stress, diet, or lifestyle. Our hair loss treatments include:

Platelet-rich Plasma therapy (PRP)

Platelet-rich stem cell therapy for hair loss (PRP) uses growth factors, including EGF, PDGF, KGF, and VEGF, to revitalize your scalp, increase blood circulation and ultimately stimulate hair follicles to grow strong and thick hair. The process consists of drawing a patient’s blood and then putting it into a centrifuge, which separates the components of the blood. The concentrated growth factor platelet layer is isolated, removed and injected back into the patient’s scalp. This concentrated platelet layer is 12-17 times more concentrated than platelets found in the bloodstream, adding more nutrients and oxygen to the scalp.

Cell Plus Therapy

This therapy uses the body’s own hair follicle stem cells to strengthen the existing hair follicles and grow new hair. Tissue containing hair follicle stem cells is harvested from the back of the head where the cell structure is stronger. The tissue is then transferred to a lab where the stem cells are isolated and concentrated. The results are then injected into balding and thinning areas of the scalp to encourage new hair growth. Results can start to be seen approximately 45-90 days after treatment.

Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)

Our LLLT treatment is designed to help maintain the hair, as well as the scalp. It works through the process of photo-bio-stimulation. By firing low-level laser light at the scalp, it stimulates the scalp and causes the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). This provides energy to the cells and increases blood circulation in the scalp, enabling a better flow of oxygen and nutrients to stimulate new hair growth.
