Female vs. Male Hair Transplants: Unveiling the Truth

If you’ve ever wondered whether female and male hair transplants are the same, the answer might surprise you: yes, they share the same procedures. Despite the misconception that hair transplants are predominantly a male solution, both men and women can benefit from these procedures. Let’s explore the details.

Androgenic Alopecia: The Culprit Behind Pattern Baldness

Pattern baldness, or androgenic alopecia, is a widespread genetic condition that causes hair loss. While it’s more commonly associated with men, women can also experience this condition. The root cause lies in a genetic malfunction that leads to sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone derived from testosterone.

In men, this sensitivity often results in a receding hairline or an expanding bald spot at the crown, leading to a more noticeable and widespread hair loss pattern. In women, the effects are often more diffuse, with thinning hair across the scalp.

Why are Hair Transplants Less Common in Women?

The physiology of pattern baldness in women has contributed to the perception that hair transplants are less common for them. The diffuse nature of women’s hair loss was historically the reason for the lower rate of hair transplants being attempted because of the challenges of finding a suitable donor area for transplantation.

Breaking the Mold: Hair Transplants for Women

Recent advancements in technology and techniques have made both male and female hair transplants possible. Women experiencing pattern baldness, especially those with localized thinning and a stable donor area, can now explore the benefits of hair transplantation.

Types of Hair Transplants at Bangkok Hair Clinic

Bangkok Hair Clinic offers various types of hair transplants and hair loss therapy to cater to individual needs. Only hair transplants offer a permanent solution to pattern hair loss, and with recent developments in the technology of the most popular techniques, they are being used more on female patients to achieve the same success rates our male patients experience.

Two hair transplantation techniques are used to transplant hair in both males and females at Bangkok Hair Clinic.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

Nearly 50% of men in their 40s have male pattern baldness

This minimally invasive procedure involves extracting individual hair follicles from the patient’s donor area and transplanting them to the thinning or balding areas. There are two types of FUE hair transplants: shaven and non-shaven. FUE shaven is a transplant procedure where the first step is to shave the entire head. This type of procedure is often required when a large area must be filled with transplanted hair follicles, which are taken from a donor area at the back of the head. The follicles are then implanted by creating incisions only 0.6-0.8 mm wide that heal quickly.

The FUE non-shaven technique is an option if the patient has a limited area of baldness, does not wish to change their hairstyle to cover the procedure area, or has a limited time for recovery. This is one of the techniques found to be effective on female pattern baldness. The technique requires precise implantation of individual follicles to areas of the scalp around the existing hair. Although technically challenging, the procedure results in a natural hairline and a full head of hair. It often appears as if no surgery has been performed.

FUE with Implanter

This type of transplantation is also called Direct Hair Implantation (DHI). This novel and new procedure involves taking strong, permanent hair follicles from the back of the head and implanting them in the target area using a specialized tool called a Lion Implanter. This instrument provides greater precision and offers a natural and seamless result. It causes significantly less mechanical trauma to the implantation area, speeds up the healing process and improves the success rate of the procedure.

The FUE with Implanter technique has also proven to be effective on female pattern baldness. The greater precision it offers works well when the patient has a limited donor area, and the existing hair is diffuse.
